Sinopec will sell cleaner petroll in 2014

The Chinese giant Sinopec Corp., largest refiner of oil in Asia, announced that it was trying to improve its facilities for desulphurization and provide clean
petroleum products from 2014 in order to meet the concerns of the public regarding the quality of the oil.

The company said on Friday in a press release that it would modernize its desulphurization facilities in 12 refineries by end 2013 and sell petroleum products in accordance with the national standard 4,  governing emissions of pollutants.

Beijing is the only city in China to have adopted the national standard 5, the equivalent of the Euro 5 standard for emissions from the vehicles, which limits the sulphur to 10 ppm (part per million).

Developed regions of the country, including Shanghai, Jiangsu and Zhejiang, use the national standard 4 (50 ppm), while the rest of the country adopts national standard 3 (150 ppm).

Clouds of pollution repeated this winter have caused an uproar among public opinion about the bad quality of the oil, because it aggravates air pollution. Fu Chengyu, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sinopec,  recognized that refining companies are directly responsible for the smog.
